Stoic Welder Lo Soft Shell Jacket

By , March 24, 2012 11:09 AM

Stoic Logo

It’s time to put the down jackets away for the winter with spring skiing conditions arriving early in Wasatch. The Stoic Welder Lo Softshell Jacket is the perfect jacket for the warmer temps up on the mountains.

The Stoic Welder Lo Softshell jacket was designed with a women’s specific fit. The low-loft fleece insulates without adding bulk. The jacket is breathable and comes with a weather resistant fabric. Designed to be a technical jacket from the fabric used for the design to the fit to functionality. It can be used as either a jacket for warmer days or a mid-layer on those cold days.

The cut of this jacket is a women’s specific 3-D ergonomic cut that adds dimension to the softshell Power Shield and makes this jacket a dynamic fit. The Polartec Power Shield softshell fabric will keep the winds out yet let water vapors escape when working up a sweat on the uphill climb.

The Welder jacket seams are streamlined to eliminate winds to pass through zippers and seams. The seams are welded to eliminate wind to pass through as well as eliminate bulk in the jacket.

The Welder jacket comes with a fully adjustable hood that will fit over helmets if stuck on a breezy ridge. The Stoic Welder Lo Softshell Jacket is a great go to jacket for spring skiing, a layer piece on a cold blustery day or on an up hill ascent in the backcountry.

Arcteryx Atom Jacket

By , November 29, 2011 11:24 AM

Arcteryx Atom Jacket If you want a breathable mid layer, this is the go to jacket. The Arcteryx atom jacket is the perfect find for someone looking for a breathable insulated mid layer jacket. I use the atom jacket mainly when I’m hiking in the backcountry. The atom jacket is constructed of a stretch fabric which makes it water repellant and wind resistant making it the perfect accent jacket, even on a cold day. The core loft lining will keep you warm but not allow you to overheat. The underarms have a breathable material which allows water vapors to pass through leaving you dry and an ideal temperature. The atom jacket is also great paired with a shell over the top when making laps at the resorts. I particularly like the atom jacket with the hood to keep my neck warm if it’s windy or throw over my head while I’m ripping the skins off my skis to prepare for the descent. It’s also a great jacket to wear around town. I give the atom jacket a double thumbs up.

Suggested Retail Price: $180; with the Hood: $200

Arcteryx Sabre SV Jacket

Arc'Teryx Sabre SV Jacket

Softshell or Hardshell? These days, that’s a tough decision to make when it comes to choosing a ski jacket. With the new Arcteryx Sabre Jacket, Arc’teryx is walking a fine line between these two options. Although it’s made from stretchy Gore-Tex Softshell material, the Sabre SV has the DNA of a technical hardshell and is guaranteed waterproof and breathable. With just a hint of fleece insulation, the jacket is warm yet light, weighing in at only 24.5 ounces. The cut is very generous, allowing for ample layering underneath if the weather turns foul. The only complaint would be the lack of pockets, which seems to be the norm from Arcteryx; there are just 2 front hand pockets and an internal chest pocket. Pockets aside, this is a great offering that features Arcteryx’s attention to detail and finish. Throw on the Sabre SV jacket, cinch up the powder skirt and get yourself some Alta powder.

Suggested Retail Price of the Sabre SV Jacket: $450

The North Face Redpoint

The North Face Redpoint Jacket

I reviewed the The North Face Redpoint Jacket back in 2005. I loved this insulated jacket then, and still love it now. I am happy to report that even though my Redpoint is now 5 seasons old, it still looks good, and most importantly, is still warm. This jacket is the first thing I grab out of the closet when it’s cold outside. It must have over 750 days of wear and tear on it. Yet, the Primaloft insulation is still perfectly in place and all the zippers and pockets still function as they should. The new Redpoints are made with the same care that The North Face used way back when. You can still stuff it down into the big hand pocket. The only difference with the new jacket is an addition of a touch of fleece on the coller. I think I may have to buy another one just for that touch of fleece, as well as to add another color to the repertoire. A couple years ago, I also added a Redpoint vest to my collection and I wear that under my ski jacket on the coldest days. Just like the jacket, it works great and I plan to use it for several years to come.
