Yesterday’s Freeride Competition at Snowbird was not one to miss. Despite the hardpack conditions athletes were hucking their meat and blasting turns top to bottom. All of the top three men’s spots belonged to Alta and Snowbird locals. First place going to Grant Howard, second place to Lars Chickering Ayers, and third place to Andrew Pollard. All three runs were super fluid with everything from 40 footers to 360’s thrown in all the way to the bottom.
The womens’s top spots belonged to Ashley Bembenek, Kele Thorsen, and Alaina Huestis. The ladies put on quite the show as well throwing down super tight lines at high speeds with multiple airs. The next stop on the Subaru Freeride Series takes us to Telluride, CO on March 4-8. It will be broadcast live here. Don’t miss it!
This season Alta and Snowbird will be offering half-priced AltaBird tickets (Alta’s Boarding Pass Deal) to anyone who plans to ski within 24 hours of arriving into Salt Lake City’s international airport. For only $52.50 ($34.50 for children) skiers can get their pow on within minutes of landing at both Alta and Snowbird ski resorts. Just preregister here and then bring your boarding pass and photo ID to any Alta or Snowbird ticket office to receive your half-priced pass.
Snowbird’s closing day brought clear skies and loads of party goers ready to celebrate another great season. Only the Tram and Little Cloud remained open but skiing down low was still decent making tram laps the way to go. The snow was a bit firm in the morning but quickly softened up by early afternoon. Around 1:00 skiers began piling up at the bottom of Anderson’s Hill to celebrate the annual pond skimming party. Participants put on a great show with everything from tricks to crashes being displayed. Snowbird is now closed for the season so get your skins out, it’s time to hike!
This weekend’s 12″ storm created some superb conditions at the Bird. With only one weekend left it was great to see one last storm before it’s all over. The skiing up high was pure untouched cream and although the lower elevation shots were a bit slushy the snow skied fast with plenty of coverage all the way to the bottom. Snowbird is currently running the Tram, Little Cloud, and Mineral Basin Express with backcountry access into the Cirque and Baldy. They plan to run lifts this Friday-Monday from 8-2 p.m for their final weekend. So come get your last taste of winter before summer officially starts.
Today’s storm blew in light and fluffy and made for some supreme skiing conditions. Alta reported 12″ in the past 24 hours on top of the 17″ from this weekend. Alta Ski Patrol opened Backside pretty early on but you could definitely feel the bottom in spots. Thirds and Eagle’s Nest were skiing great but nothing compared to the endless waist deep turns in Key Hole. Skies cleared late in the afternoon making for a beautiful end to another magical day in Alta…
If you missed round one of Snowbird’s Freeskiing comp today make sure you don’t miss out on tomorrow’s runs. Held on Silverfox, athletes were throwing down like it was a two foot pow day. Tomorrow the event moves to the North Baldy venue where competitors will have even more cliffs and chutes to play around on. Remember, if you don’t have a Snowbird season pass or don’t feel like forking over the $78 for a lift ticket you can always watch the event for free, live on the Freeskiing World Tour’s website. Starting at 10am and running until 2pm this will be an event you won’t want to miss.
It’s official the Alta Snowbird connection is open. The skiing may not be much different but at least it’s some variety which we need due to lack of snow this year. From Alta you take the Suglarloaf lift. At the top take the EBT/Collins Return and you’ll see the gates to go from Alta to Snowbird. From there you can drop into Mineral Basin.
If you can catch Mineral Basin on a powder day you won’t be disappointed. Traverse out to the bookends to catch some hang time off the cliffs. Although I wouldn’t recommend Mineral Basin on a white out day. There’s not a lot of trees back there and you’ll easily get lost in the white oblivion.
When you’re ready to head back to Alta take Snowbirds Baldy Express lift at the base of Mineral Basin and you’ll come out where you started, EBT/Collins Return. You can access 4700 acres of skiable terrain and ski two great resorts in one day.
