The 7th Actual FRANK World Classic

By , April 18, 2017 7:01 PM

Alta’s closing day was one to remember.  It was so much fun you almost forgot they were closing a week early.  The annual Frank and High Boy parties were bigger than ever with loads of entertainment all afternoon.  There seemed to be quite a few injuries from the two events with multiple life flights spotted.  Hopefully everyone is ok!

Down in the Goldminer’s parking lot, after the Frank World Ski Competition was over, live bands setup to usher Alta skiers into hibernation.  Marinade and Stonefed lit up the dance floor with funky jams all afternoon.  Stoke was high and Alta skier’s couldn’t have asked for much more from another epic closing day to the season.  Thanks so much for all the support this year.  We’ll see you in the fall!

Upcoming ACE Events

By , January 19, 2017 4:09 PM

Looking for something to do in the Alta community? You can always find interesting opportunities in Little Cottonwood Canyon through Alta Community Enrichment (ACE). Check out their website at altaarts.org. ACE is a nonprofit aimed to promote learning and create opportunities for individual and group participation in arts, cultural events and education.

This month they have put on live music every Sunday night at the Peruvian.  They just finished a backcountry 101 Avalanche course for Alta business employees. On Friday January 20th, ACE presents Eric Foxman at Our Lady of the Snow at 6:30. He is a member of the Portland Storytellers Guild and will humor and inspire you with his true stories collected from around the world.

Also, don’t miss out on National Geographic’s explorer Mike Libecki.  This is his 18th annual presentation on his adventures around the world to some of the most remote, exotic locations.  This event is also a fund raiser for The Humane Society and Nepal Earthquake Fund/Human Outreach Project with a massive raffle of gear and clothing for the benefit.  Hope to see you there!

The First Last Annual Frank World Classic Ski Competition

By , May 6, 2016 12:19 PM

This year’s Frank may or may not have been the last.  Let’s hope not because once again the festivities reminded us just how much fun the party known simply as Frank can be.  Locals worked extra hard this past week to build a stage for the announcing crew and others took on the even larger project of building a series of jumps.  A tunnel was constructed with at least 6 huge kickers surrounding it.  A less-than-Bud-mogul-tour quality bump line was also in place down the gut of Punch Bowl.

Skiers were as usual throwing huge tricks and taking crazy speed in to the kickers.  And the party of onlookers was larger than any of the previous years.  First place went to local Andrew Pollard, for no particular reason and that’s how we like it.  Cheers to everyone who participated and those who just showed up to drink.

By , April 8, 2016 12:39 PM

demoday_newsletterAlta’s 2015-2016 season is coming to a close in the coming weeks but it’s not all bad news.  A host of events is scheduled to take place starting tomorrow.  Kicking things off is the “Alta in April Demo Day.”  Held at the Wildcat Base, Alta and the Deep Powder House will be offering FREE next-year demos from the top ski manufactures. Companies participating include: Atomic, Blizzard, Dynastar, Rossignol, Völkl, DPS, Fischer, Line, Head, Nordica, K2, 4Frnt, ON3P, Elan and Sego.

Starting Saturday April 16th Alta will be hosting their annual Earth Day event.  Featuring eco-friendly vendors, naturalist tours and birding at Alta.  Alta Earth Day encourages environmental stewardship, responsible recreation and awareness of the relationship between climate change and the ski industry in Little Cottonwood Canyon.  Come join Alta and support Mother Earth next weekend!

Concerning Alta’s closing day details, we still have one more week of weekday skiing.   After that Alta closes it’s 7 day a week operations on Sunday, April 17.  Alta will reopen for its final days of the 2015-2016 ski season on April 22, 23 & 24.  It looks like the only lifts still in operation at that point will be Collins and Sunnyside.  Fortunately lift tickets will only run you $52 with children 12 and under getting in for $26.

It’s been a great season so far.  Come celebrate with Alta for their closing weekends!

The 3rd Annual Shreddit Showdown

By , March 4, 2016 11:34 AM

ShredditShowDownSkiMovieBlogIf you’ve been breaking out the Gopro for all those pow days this year then be sure to submit an edit in this year’s Shreddit Showdown.  You still have a week left to put the finishing touches on your edit and if you’ve been procrastinating take a look below at all the prizes up for grabs.  Get editing!

It’s time for the 3rd annual Shreddit Showdown presented by Granite Chief. Don’t know what that is? Well, for the past two years Granite Chief has hosted an annual ski-movie edit contest for skiers from all over the country. These days, everyone has a GoPro or something similar, and this is the perfect opportunity to highlight all the amazing talent in our local ski communities. Participants can enter all types of videos. In the past we’ve seen ski videos ranging from spring park laps to big-mountain, backcountry ski videos. There have been videos that highlighted a single trip taken by friends, and just about everything in between.

This year, given the great ski season that’s been happening all over the country, we’re really expecting to see some great entries coming in. In the spirit of doing things bigger and better, we’re hosting the 3rd annual Shreddit Showdown at the Tahoe Art Haus & Cinema in Tahoe City. Not only will contestants be competing for great prizes, we’ll get to those in a moment, but this year people will have a chance to see themselves skiing on the big screen.

On Thursday evening, March 24th Granite Chief will host the Shreddit Showdown red carpet awards ceremony and video premiere at the Art Haus. We will be serving complimentary appetizers and champagne, in addition to all the tasty food and beverage offerings available for purchase. There will also be great raffle prizes and gear giveaways happening all evening.

A big feature of the premiere this year is a red-carpet costume contest to see who will be crowned the “Best Worst-Dressed” skier in Tahoe. There will be both a men’s and women’s winner, and each will receive a $250 gift certificate from Prana. It’s not every day you can get paid good money just for wearing your old ski onesie or polyester tuxedo!

The prizes for the Shreddit Showdown this year have been upgraded as well. We have over $7,000 in prizes, in both grom and adult categories. Prizes include skis from Blizzard, ski boots from Tecnica, outerwear from FlyLow and Orage, GoPro Black cameras, Smith helmets and goggles and, new for this year, an avalanche airbag from BCA that will be awarded to the winner of the prestigious Silver Bullet Award. The Silver Bullet Award rewards the skier who skis the single best line, trick, or perhaps crash of the entire contest.

To enter click on the link and be sure to check out the event trailer and The Daily Pow’s second place entry from last year.

Alta’s annual torchlight parade is an event not to be missed.  It’s the one and only time each season you get to ski Alta at night.  This year a few changes have been made.  As opposed to bringing a can of food to be donated to the Utah Food Bank a $10 lift ticket must be purchased (all proceeds go to the Utah Food Bank).  Check out the full list of details below:

Celebrate the coming of the New Year! Torchlight Parade and bonfire.

  • $10 entry fee. Tickets available at both the Wildcat and Albion ticket offices and at the Skier Services desk between December 27th and December 31st. On December 31st tickets will be available prior to the parade at the Wildcat Ticket Office until 5 PM.
  • All proceeds from the evening will go to the Utah Food Bank.
  • Collins lift will start loading at approximately 5:15 PM. Skiers will unload at the angle station.
  • Participants will be allowed just one ride up Collins.
  • Children need to be accompanied by an adult and will need to have their own headlights or flashlights. Torches will be available for adults. Creative light options are welcome!
  • All participants  need to be able to ski blue, more difficult terrain with confidence in low light conditions. The parade moves at a slow pace, so speed control is very important.
  • Open containers not allowed on the lift.

Subaru Freeride Series At Snowbird

By , February 9, 2015 5:37 PM

Yesterday’s Freeride Competition at Snowbird was not one to miss.  Despite the hardpack conditions athletes were hucking their meat and blasting turns top to bottom.  All of the top three men’s spots belonged to Alta and Snowbird locals.  First place going to Grant Howard, second place to Lars Chickering Ayers, and third place to Andrew Pollard.  All three runs were super fluid with everything from 40 footers to 360’s thrown in all the way to the bottom.

The womens’s top spots belonged to Ashley Bembenek, Kele Thorsen, and Alaina Huestis.  The ladies put on quite the show as well throwing down super tight lines at high speeds with multiple airs.  The next stop on the Subaru Freeride Series takes us to Telluride, CO on March 4-8.  It will be broadcast live here.  Don’t miss it!

This Saturday, December 13, 2014 Alta Ski Resort in conjunction with K2 and Shejumps.org will be hosting the International Women’s Ski Day.  Running from 11 am-3pm female skiers are asked to meet at the base of the Collins lift for a day shredding on the slopes.  Additonal meetup times are as follows: 11 am – Collins lift for introduction and welcome.   1 pm – Albion for lunch and group picture.   3 pm –  Collins for a girl mob run!

According to K2:

IWSD will be an unforgettable day of skiing for women of all ages and abilities. Plans of “girlbombing” lift line runs, group photos, costumes, tutus, unicorns, and apres are all in the works.

Apres ski will be held at either the GMD or Peruvian Bars.  The weather looks to be bringing some fresh pow so get those skis tuned and prepare to get your girl on!
