This past Wednesday Wasatch Equality filed a federal lawsuit against Alta and it’s skiers-only policy.  According to witnesses, last Sunday (1/12/14) four snowboarders purchased Alta lift tickets and attempted to load the Collins lift.  They made it through the gates and were about to load when Alta lift employees were forced to stop the lift.  Alta’s Sheriff was called in to help make sure things didn’t get out of control.

According to their lawsuit, the four snowboarders and Wasatch Equality claim that Alta dislikes snowboarders for their allegedly reckless skiing, inconsiderate attitude, baggy clothes and their overuse of such words as “gnarly” and “radical” when describing difficult terrain.  Alta has refused to comment at this point.  According to Connie Marshall, “Alta Ski Area will not make a comment until we have been able to have a chance to look at the lawsuit statement.”

Although Alta operates on National Forest Land it owns the lifts so it should be interesting to see how this all plays out in court.  Check out the video below for more information.

  1. If Diane Harrington is a victim of discrimination at Alta, wouldn’t someone who doesn’t ski or snowboard be just as much a victim of discrimination at Brighton, Solitude, Snowbasin, or Snowbird, which are also located within Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest?
